This ancient town of Idanre is divided into two; the new settlement which is at the foot of the hills and Oke-Idanre – the old settlements on the top of the hills.

Idanre is an hilly town located about 24 kilometres southwest of Akure, Ondo State capital. Idanre Hill is one of the most beautiful natural landscapes in Nigeria.

Added to its beauty which fires human curiosity is the fact that the entire people of Idanre lived on these boulders for almost a millennium.

As a natural and cultural landscape, Idanre Hills stands out tall among all other places that have been listed in UNESCO World Heritage Sites. From any angle, one sees the hills and virtually every activity revolves round this collection of hills. Apart from that cultural role, the town pulls the wealthy and the commoner. There is a perceived mystical aura and excitement for nature lovers when they surmount the steep, daunting climb to the top.

At the top, you’ll witness a spectacular view of the new town and adjoining hills in a breath-taking manner. The flora and fauna of the place had been under scientific study for several decades.

The town is also home to a large cocoa growing community. Its restaurants make some of the best pounded-yam meals in the country. According to guides, it takes between four days and a week to fully climb all the hills and see the impressive works of nature.
